In 2016, I successfully climbed Mount Everest (8,848m) from the South Side (Nepal). This was a challenging yet unforgettable experience, requiring months of preparation, extreme endurance, and careful acclimatization.
The journey began with a flight to Lukla (2,860m), followed by a trek through the Khumbu Valley, passing famous villages like Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Tengboche (3,860m). After nearly ten days of trekking and acclimatization, we reached Everest Base Camp (5,364m).
The climb followed the classic South Col route, requiring several rotations up and down the mountain for acclimatization.
Khumbu Icefall (5,500m – 6,100m): A dangerous section with unstable ice towers, deep crevasses, and shifting seracs. We used ladders and fixed ropes to navigate through this deadly maze.
Camp 1 (6,065m) – Western Cwm: After surviving the Khumbu Icefall, the climb became more gradual but extremely hot due to the sun reflecting off the ice.
Camp 2 (6,400m): A strategic advanced base camp, offering a great view of Lhotse Face. This was the last camp before serious technical climbing began.
Camp 3 (7,300m) – Lhotse Face: A steep ice wall (40-50° incline) requiring fixed ropes and careful footing with crampons.
Camp 4 (7,950m) – The Death Zone: Situated on the South Col, this was the final resting point before the summit push. Oxygen levels were dangerously low, and strong winds made conditions even harsher.
We began the final summit attempt around midnight. The route passed through:
The Balcony (8,400m): A small rest point with an incredible view of the Himalayas at sunrise.
South Summit (8,750m): The first false summit, requiring one last steep climb over the famous Hillary Step (8,790m).
Final Ridge & Summit (8,848m): After pushing through thin air and exhaustion, I finally reached the top of the world. Standing on the Everest summit, with 360-degree views of the Himalayas, was an overwhelming and surreal moment.
Extreme Altitude: The lack of oxygen made every step exhausting.
Weather & Cold: Freezing temperatures (-30°C to -40°C) and sudden storms were always a threat.
Physical & Mental Toughness: The final climb tested my willpower, endurance, and mental strength.
Khumbu Icefall & Lhotse Face: These sections were technically demanding and required careful climbing.
